An email account in cPanel is a mailbox on your own domain, such as [email protected]. You create it inside the hosting account, then read it in webmail or in an app like Outlook or Apple Mail. This is the mailbox that comes with shared cPanel hosting. It is not a Microsoft 365 mailbox.
Open cPanel from the client portal
- Log in to the HSJ Host client portal.
- Open the hosting product for the domain you want the mailbox on.
- Click the button to log in to cPanel. That opens the control panel for that account.
If the site itself is not loading yet, the domain still needs to point at HSJ Host. Use the cPanel nameserver guide before you test mail from outside the server.
Create the mailbox
- In cPanel, open Email Accounts. It sits in the Email section.
- Click Create.
- Type the part before the @ sign, then choose the domain. For a shared inbox, info or hello is clearer than a person’s first name if several people will read it.
- Set a password. Use the generator if you want a long one, and store it in a password manager.
- Leave the storage quota at the default unless you need to cap one mailbox so it cannot fill the whole account.
- Click Create.
The username is the full address, including the domain. A login of just “info” will fail.
Read the mail
From the Email Accounts list, open Check Email to use webmail in the browser. That is the quickest way to confirm the mailbox works.
For a phone or desktop app, open Connect Devices on that same mailbox. cPanel shows the exact incoming and outgoing server, the ports, and whether SSL is required. Copy those values rather than guessing a server name. The username is still the full email address.
Typical secure settings, which Connect Devices will confirm for your account, are IMAP on port 993 and SMTP on port 465. Both use SSL. If an app offers “password” and “app password”, use the mailbox password you just created.
If the mailbox will not send or receive
- Sending works in webmail but not in Outlook: the app is using the wrong SMTP port or it is not signing in with the full email address.
- Nothing arrives from the internet: the domain’s MX records are not on this cPanel account. Check the nameservers first, then Email Routing in cPanel, which should be Local for mail hosted here.
- You need Outlook, Teams and a Microsoft login: that is Office 365, not a cPanel mailbox. The two can exist on the same domain only if MX records point at one place.
A new website still needs a place to live. If you do not have hosting yet, start with a cPanel hosting plan. The mailbox is created after the account exists, not before.
